MISSION

The Mercy College Library provides the College community instructional consultation, research support, and access to information to promote lifelong learning and infuse opportunities to develop information literacy throughout the College experience.

VALUES

In addition to the five core values of Mercy College of Health Sciences, the Library values

• Service: The Library is service-oriented first and foremost.
• Collaboration: The Library values collaboration among its own staff, across the entire MCHS community, and with local, state and national libraries, associations and consortia to advance the Library’s mission of serving others.
• Access: The Library values free and open access to its services and collections.
• Information Literacy: The Library values teaching users how to gather, critically evaluate, and use information.

OBJECTIVES

With this mission and these values in mind the library endeavors to

• Develop collections of sufficient quality, size, and diversity to support instruction and research.
• Organize and provide effective access to these collections along with access to a variety of external information resources.
• Teach formally and informally the skills and knowledge necessary for members of the MCHS community to utilize information resources independently, critically, and efficiently using both traditional and evolving technology.
• Provide a staff that collectively possesses the specialized skills necessary for the library to function in a diverse, global, and increasingly complex information environment.
• Create an environment within the library and beyond that encourages research, collaboration, and life-long learning.

VISION

The Mercy College Library is a dynamic member of the MCHS community and provides equitable access to information for those on campus and those engaged in online education. The Library embraces and promotes change in its organization, collections, and services to meet current demands and anticipate future needs, and encourages and supports both independent and collaborative learning at all levels within the community.

SPONSORSHIP

The Mercy College Library, located in the Sullivan Center, was generously sponsored by the Mercy Auxilliary of Central Iowa during the construction of the building in 2005.

COPYRIGHT

Mercy College of Health Sciences Library abides by all regulations of relevant sections in the Copyright Revision Act of 1976, the Sonny Bono Copyright Term Extension Act, and the Digital Millennium Copyright Act.

INTELLECTUAL FREEDOM AND CENSORSHIP

Mercy College Library affirms the American Library Association’s “Library Bill of Rights” and the Association of College and Research Library Association’s “Intellectual Freedom Principles for Academic Libraries.”

QUIET ENVIRONMENT

The Mercy College Library strives to create an environment that is quiet and conducive for research and study. Examples of noisy behavior include, but are not limited to, loud talking, using cell phones and using audio-visual equipment without headphones. If a patron reports a noise or disturbance to a staff member, the staff member will ask the person(s) involved to be quiet or move to a study room. If a staff member receives a second complaint, the person(s) making the noise will be asked to leave the library. Patrons should turn all cell phones to silent before entering the library. All calls should be placed and answered outside the library.
