Mercy College of Health Sciences will host a two-day training on Public Health Disaster Preparedness for Hospitals & Healthcare Organizations within the Community Infrastructure. The training will be conducted by Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service.
?The course will provide information specific to hospitals and organizations vulnerability to a disaster. During this FEMA sponsored course, participants will be introduced to the various natural, technological, and civil hazards to which hospitals and healthcare organizations may be vulnerable and the potential impacts of those hazards.
Specific topics within the training will include fundamentals of preparedness, preparing the recovery, preparing the response, what are we preparing for, and the assessment of preparation.
“Since 9/11, there have been many occasions around the world to call upon public health emergency preparedness and response and to face the ethical dilemmas that accompany it,” remarked Dr. Joelle Stolte, Public Health Program Chair. “Events such as the hard lessons learned in the devastating earthquake in Haiti in 2010, the flooding and damage to Fukushima Daiichi nuclear reactor in Japan in 2011, Hurricane Sandy in New York City in 2013, and the serious Ebola outbreak in West Africa in 2014. Disaster preparedness is that aspect of public health designed to ensure sustained public health and medical readiness in the event of an emergency, and to provide safe and healthful environments within the community,” explained Dr. Stolte.
Suggested audience for the training includes students and professionals of Healthcare such as EMS/Paramedics, Nurses, Public Health, Health Science Education, and Healthcare Administrators. Continuing Education Units are available for this training and have been approved by the ER Nurses Association to receive 1.6 CEUs and 1.00 ACE. Training has also been approved for EMS to receive 16 hours. You must complete both days (all 16 hours) to receive CEUs.
The training is free and open to the public. It will take place on October 2 and 3, 2019, from 8:00 am – 4:00 pm and will be held at Mercy College of Health Sciences‘ campus in Sullivan Center-102.
