Clinical education experiences are an important component of the overall curriculum and each of our academic programs greatly appreciates your contributions. The resources below are designed to assist you in your clinical instructor role. Please contact us with questions or suggestions.

Mercy College of Health Sciences’ Physical Therapist Assistant Clinical Resources are listed below.
The resources listed below are designed to assist you in your clinical instructor role for PTA Clinical I. This is the first clinical experience for the student. This is a part-time integrated clinical experience. The student will appreciate your direct supervision and feedback in order to progress toward entry-level PTA practice.
The Clinical Instructor Checklist provides a listing of recommended tasks prior to the arrival of the student, when the student arrives at your facility, during the clinical experience, and at the completion.
The PTA 163 Syllabus and the student competency document will assist you in determining appropriate responsibilities based on the scope of knowledge and skills covered in the curriculum thus far. The student will complete a weekly reflection about their experiences.
As the CI, you will complete the PTA 163 Clinical I Evaluation Form. The evaluation is completed at the end of the clinical experience. The PTA 163 Clinical Evaluation Criteria will guide you on theexpectations of the level of performance for each criteria.
The student is responsible for completing the Generic Abilities Assessment and the Generic Abilities Form at the end of the clinical experience. As the CI, you will review the student’s self-assessment, provide any additional feedback, and sign off on the form.
The student will complete an assessment of the clinical experience and clinical instruction. These should be discussed with you at the end of the clinical.
The Clinical Problem-Solving Algorithm for the PTA has been taught in class and its use is encouraged in the clinical setting.
Also included are some links to some additional documents which may be helpful in your role as a clinical instructor (Clinical Policy FAQ, Clinical Course FAQ, and Simple vs. Complex Cases).

The student and CI will work together each week to complete the Weekly Planning Form. This form includes a brief summary of the week as well as goals for the upcoming week.
As the CI, you will complete the Clinical Performance Instrument (CPI). The Clinical Performance Instrument is completed at mid-term and the end of the clinical experience. The student will also complete the CPI as a self-assessment. Use the CPI anchor definitions and sample behaviors to guide feedback.
