Every Thanksgiving season, Mercy College of Health Sciences hosts an annual turkey bowling event to help raise funds and food for the Des Moines Religious Council (DMARC). The tradition started in 2009 and brings together students, faculty, and staff to donate money or a can of food in exchange for three rounds of bowling with a real turkey in Brennan Hall Courtyard.

“The turkey is always one that has been left too long in the freezer for someone which shows how lucky we are— we always have enough food. There’s a lot of duct tape involved and we roll it across a surgical drape that was left over–expired, just like the turkey,” stated Amy MacKrell, Liberal Arts and Sciences Professor who helps sponsor and work the event each year.

The departments of Physical Therapist Assistant and Liberal Arts and Sciences have been hosting the event for years.

“Some years it’s subzero, snowy, raining, but this year, we got lucky,” stated MacKrell standing in the sunshine of an unusually warm fall day.

This year’s event raised $153.00 and half barrel of food. Donations are still being collected through the end of the week to support DMARC, a health-based food pantry and is the largest food pantry network in Iowa.
